14 Oct Top tips to spring clean your small business
Now is a great time to spring clean your small business. If you spring clean your business you will be prepared as we enter the busy end of year, or if you’re coming out of lockdown you will be ready to go as the economy ramps up. Spring cleaning can also give you a strong sense of satisfaction and helps you become more productive. It is also about new beginnings, and after another difficult year in many parts of Australia, it might be just what you need.
Our top 7 tips
Here are our top 7 tips to spring clean your small business and get you ready and raring for the months ahead.
1. Tidy up your email inbox.
Go through your email inbox and delete emails you don’t need. Sorting by sender is a good way to find notifications and subscription emails you don’t need to keep. Once cleaned up, archive emails from your inbox to store them in a separate yet easily accessible location.
2. Sort your filing.
Organise and delete or destroy your digital and hard copy files. If that seems like a daunting task, break the job down into achievable chunks. Paper files can be scanned to store them digitally. Be sure to shred any important documents. And with your digital files, keep in mind the adage ‘think twice before you delete’ and ask ‘what’s the worst thing that could happen if I deleted this?’
3. Clean-up your database/s.
Get your database into shape. Remove duplicate entries, update contact details of your customers and suppliers – names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. Delete or archive contacts you don’t use anymore.
4. Update your operations manual.
Your operations manual is not a set and forget tool. Review your documented systems and processes and make updates if they are redundant or need modifying. The pandemic may have influenced the way you work on a day to day basis and many of those systems may remain the same or become irrelevant. There may also be policies you need to redevelop or delete.
5. Tidy and sort your desk, office or shop.
Get your desk, office or retail space tidied and sorted. Removing visual and mental clutter is uplifting and can make you more productive. You might even like to do some simple redecorating.
6. Backup your computers and mobile devices.
Even if you use cloud-based software, back everything up on a hard drive or external server.
7. Get your financial records up-to-date.
Spring clean your finances – ensure you have documented all your expenses and pay any invoices that are due (or overdue!). And be sure to follow up on any money owed to you. Bank any cash and cheques.
